Hawaii (KITV) — Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa hangs up her political hat – at least for now – after losing the primary election for the governor’s race on Saturday night.
The democrat trailed Governor Ige all night by about seven percentage points, and conceded the race after the third printout at 10:30 p.m. Her concession speech thanked her volunteers, “the backbone” of her campaign.
She says she has no plans to run for another seat right now and called this the “last” of her “political adventures.” Her plans include a brief rest before returning to DC to finish her congressional term. She promises to help her successor with a smooth transition.
Hanabusa says her entry in this race gave people “a choice” and helped shape a better governor in Ige. “The better your opponent the better you become. And it did; it forced the Ige campaign to get focused on the issues. And people believed him, so they did it well.”
Hanabusa asks her supporters to back Ige in the general election. She will be at Sunday’s unity breakfast for the Democratic party.
