ATLANTA, GA (WGCL) — Authorities are investigating a string of car break-ins at one of Atlanta’s most popular tourist destinations.
On any given day, the parking decks at the Georgia Aquarium are packed with families just looking to have a good time. Instead, police say they fell victim to a recent crime spree.
Police just released new surveillance video from the parking deck on Baker Street. In one clip, it looks like one of the suspects drops a bag that was taken from a car.
Officials with the Georgia Aquarium issued the following statement to our newsroom:
We are aware of the ongoing issue of car break-ins throughout much of the city of Atlanta. For the last several weeks Georgia Aquarium has been providing Atlanta Police Department with information and security camera footage to help assist with these cases. We take this matter and the safety of all our guests, staff, volunteers and animals very seriously. We have security cameras throughout our parking deck and a 24/7 security team to monitor our building, parking deck, and entrances and exits. As in all public spaces, we remind our guests to take or hide their valuables and to lock their vehicles.
Police say after breaking into the vehicles, the suspects then use stolen credit cards taken from those cars and go on a shopping spree.
CBS46 investigated and found at least 10 police reports. Most of the victims we found are from outside metro Atlanta and some are even from out of state.
