Shreveport, LA (KTBS) — A man accused of forcing an Uber driver to take him from Bedford, Texas, to Shreveport — then stealing the car and heading west on I-20 — is behind bars in Harrison County.
Ekpono Eckponobong, the Uber driver, told police he picked up a man in Bedford Saturday — and the man told him to drive to Shreveport, where the man’s family had been killed. Once they were in Shreveport, the man held a knife to Eckponobong’s throat and ordered him out of the vehicle. Eckponobong slowed down and jumped out.
The man with the knife drove away and headed west on I-20. Authorities found the car in a ditch near the Hallsville exit on I-20 in Harrison County. Shortly after that, they found a shirtless man flailing his arms and running between vehicles on the interstate. Authorities arrested the man about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
They identified the man as Richard Darby, a Louisiana resident. Darby is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
