Judge orders police to release body-cam footage of controversial middle school arrest to the public

    Winston-Salem, NC (WXII) — A judge has ordered the release of body-camera footage connected to the arrest of a 14-year-old girl in the parking lot of a Winston-Salem middle school last month.

The incident unfolded on Oct. 5 at Hanes Magnet Middle School.

The decision was made Tuesday morning by Judge Anderson Cromer during a hearing in Forsyth Superior Court.

WXII — along with the Winston-Salem Journal and two other TV stations — WFMY and WGHP — filed the petition requesting public release of the body-camera footage showing Officer Timothy McCormick’s arrest of 14-year-old Rockell Baldwin.

Under state law, police body-camera footage can be released only through a court order.

As a result of Tuesday’s decision, an hour-plus portion of body-camera footage that McCormick recorded leading up to the arrest is expected to be released later this week.

WXII expects to obtain a copy of the video as early as Thursday.
