Lawrenceville, GA (WGCL) — Thousands of dollars worth of live fish were stolen from Randy’s Perennials and Water Gardens in Gwinnett County, leaving the owner desperate to find them.

You can’t mistake the markings of the large Koi fish, some of them selling for more than $1,000 each. According to the owner, someone stole about 80 fish from the store.

The owner, David Waters, also thinks the suspect(s) hopped a backed gate Thursday night and stole different sizes of the Koi fish along with Oranda goldfish — some of them imported from Japan. In total, nearly $8,000 worth of fish were stolen.

Waters says if your’e in the market for this kind of fish, you should ask questions about where they came from and do some homework before buying them from someone on a site like Craigslist.

“It’s just not fair,” said Waters. “We’re a family-owned business trying to make it, and so when someone comes in and steals this quantity of fish or really any quantity of fish, but really this amount of Koi it’s just hard for us to recover.”

He’s also fearing for the safety of the fish, not knowing what kind of environment the suspect(s) have them in.
