Maricopa, AZ (KPHO/KTVK ) — An elderly couple in Maricopa were helped from their home by two bystanders Sunday morning after a fire broke out in their kitchen.
Maricopa Fire and Medical spokesman, Battalion Chief Ken Pantoja, said their firefighters were called to the home located near Honeycutt Rd. and Maricopa Groves Parkway around 10:40 A.M.
“When firefighters arrived the elderly couple was out of the home, two neighbors driving by helped the man get out of the house, the woman was already out,” said Pantoja. The man who was in the home was taken to Chandler Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation.
One of the the family’s cats was found under a bed with no signs of life.
Firefighter David Maas used a ‘Fido Kit’ and was able to provide oxygen to the animal until it came around.
The cat was returned to it’s owner’s on scene and is expected to survive, at least for one more life!
Fire investigators say food left unattended on the stove caught fire when the couple forgot about it while watching television, said Pantoja. They will be displaced for some time while repairs are made to the home.
Maricopa firefighters carry ‘Fido Kits’. This is a kit to administer oxygen that is specially made for cats and dogs. It works with the animal’s snout in the same way a regular mask works with a person’s face and nose.
