Oklahoma City, OK (KOCO) — An Oklahoma lawmaker is speaking out about concerns over his proposed bill that would ban and criminalize abortion, classifying the procedure as felony homicide.
Republican Sen. Joseph Silk, from Broken Bow, filed Senate Bill 13, which would prohibit the use of abortion in any circumstance.
“Life begins at conception. So what the bill does is that it offers human life protection through all phases. So, at the moment of fertilization, it offers them the same protection as a 1-year-old child,” Silk said during an interview with KOCO 5’s Maggie Carlo.
The bill would, “provide to unborn children the equal protection of the laws of this state. Any abortion procedure that results in the death of an unborn child is subject to the same laws governing homicide, manslaughter, justifiable homicide, and excusable homicide. Additionally, wrongful damages may be recovered by representatives of the deceased.”
The bill further states that, “physicians, physician assistants, abortion clinics, and counseling services cannot provide any counseling, referrals, or services related to abortion. No exceptions are allowed under the measure.”
Silk said men could also be charged in these cases, depending on what role they played in the decision. He said dochey played in the decision. He said doctors should be held liable.
