KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KSHB/KMCI) — Foot size and a detective’s sharp eye led to a large drug bust at Kansas City’s Amtrak station.
The bust happened Thursday after the South West Chief train from Los Angeles, Calif., arrived at the train station in Kansas City.
A detective stopped Wilie L. Braison, 46, after Braison grabbed a piece of luggage and got off the train, according to court documents.
Braison answered several questions from the detective and agreed to a search of his gray suitcase.
The detective opened the suitcase and spotted a large box labeled as a variety package of cookies, the documents state.
The box, however, was much heavier than a normal box filled with cookies.
A quick search of the box revealed a clear plastic bag filled with over five pounds of methamphetamine.
A second detective found a pair of size 18 high top tennis shoes in the suitcase, according to the court documents.
The detective also noticed Braison’s feet were too small to wear size 18 shoes.
The shoes were packed with nearly three pounds of heroin.
Braison told detectives he started his trip in Los Angeles and was to be paid $2,500.
He is charged in federal court with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, which carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
Court documents revealed Braison was convicted in the 1990s on drug charges.
