BURLINGTON, Vt. (WPTZ) — There’s a new place in town, on the corner of King and Saint Paul Streets in downtown Burlington, that’s filled with friendly faces who are ready to greet you with a smile.

“I say (hello) to people and usually offer them a sample of coffee if they want it,” said Kate Bove, an employee at Perky Planet.

“I’m a roast master (and) barista,” Ian Macleod said.

They’re serving more than coffee.

“Perky Planet is a coffee shop that employs people with disabilities,” Bove said.

The coffee gives people, including Bove and Macleod, an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

“I have a very rare genetic disorder that’s called Williams syndrome,” Bove said.

“I, myself, have a brain injury,” Macleod said.

They’re part of a social revolution that’s helping to break down barriers and misconceptions that some people might have about those with disabilities.

“I know how it feels when people have those misconceptions and it’s hard,” Bove said.

The employees are supported by hundreds of people who donated to the cafe’s Indiegogo campaign in 2018, raising more than $20,000 to buy new machines just in time for the coffee shop’s soft opening over the weekend.

“On our opening day, Saturday, we sold mainly this drink, the maple latte,” Macleod said.

The drinks are made with coffee sourced from female farmers.

“It’s a coffee with a cause. You’re not just buying a cup of coffee from a mass-produced coffee roaster or producer or cafe,” Macleod said.

Customers are supporting a social movement.

“If you ever felt that anyone would judge you, you’re not going to be judged here. I can tell you that much,” Macleod said.

“I feel respected and included. People know who I am and what I’m capable of. So it feels good,” Bove said.

Inside Perky Planet, you’ll find a sense of accomplishment, kindness and understanding that, along with a cup of coffee, will warm your heart.

Perky Planet is located at 194 St. Paul Street in Burlington.
