Kunia (KITV) — A Kunia farmworker saw a five-foot-long boa constrictor near bushes along Kunia Road last Friday and held it overnight in a trash can.
The next morning, the man and his nephew turned in the boa to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s Plant Quarantine office.
Boa constrictors are non-venomous, and can grow up to 12 feet in length. They are native to Central and South America.
Snakes pose a serious threat to Hawaii’s environment, as they have no natural predators.
“Many species also prey on birds and their eggs, increasing the threat to endangered native birds,” said DOA in a press release.
