BOZEMAN, Mont. – The demolition of both of Montana State University’s gyms is complete but the project is far from over.

It has been over a month since the North and South Gyms’ roof collapsed and now the Upper Gym that separated them is next to be torn down.

MSU officials say crews are now working inside, preparing for demolition through mechanical, electrical and plumbing work.

This will take about two weeks.

Officials add that after that, people should expect to see crews as they start to carefully demolish the Upper Gym.

The MSU News Service director, Michael Becker, says how crews take that building down is crucial to the rest of the fitness center’s survival.

“We want to make sure that in taking down the Upper Gym we’re being careful of the building around it,” Becker says. “I mean, the remaining fitness center was renovated not that long ago and it is in very good shape so as we take down those walls, we want to be very cautious to make sure that we are not going to damage anything.”

MSU officials say the university does plan to rebuild but they are not yet sure what will replace the gyms exactly.

The university will rely on the close consultation of students and the MSU community before going forward.
