Billings police report officer-involved shooting near downtown

Billings police reported an officer-involved shooting on the 1200 block of North 26th Street Thursday afternoon.

Authorities described the incident as a “critical incident." Police released no other details but asked people to avoid the area, which is a residential neighborhood behind a City Brew coffee shop.

Neighbors described a chaotic and frightening scene as dozens of officers flooded the block.

Brooke Bigler said she and her son had just returned from the gym when they noticed an unusual number of police vehicles.

"I noticed that there was a lot of cops, and that's happened like a few times this year, but then I heard someone shout and I heard a gunshot, so we just ran inside, and then there was like seriously like 30 cops, and I was like, 'Wow, it's a lot,'" said Bigler. “This is a little scary. I'm trying not to think too much about it.”

A video recorded by a nearby resident appeared to capture part of the incident, including what sounded like additional gunfire. A man can be heard asking, "They shot him again?"

Bob Bratton, who has lived in the area for nearly 50 years, said he was alerted by a neighbor and came outside to find the street filled with emergency responders.

“I just saw a person, looked like a male, laying on the on the street out in the middle of the street in front of my house,” said Bratton. “I just couldn't imagine what had happened."

Police have not said what led to the shooting or how seriously the man was injured.

Authorities said additional information will be released at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday.
