LEWISTOWN — The Lewistown Police Department said there is no danger to the community after an incident involving an armed man shut down the area around West Main Street on Sunday morning.
According to a news release, LPD responded to an apartment complex in the 100 block of West Main Street for a report of a domestic disturbance on Friday. When officers arrived at approximately 7 p.m., a woman left the residence as a man barricaded himself inside with a firearm.
The Great Falls Police Department’s tactical team was deployed to Lewistown, and officers spent an “extended period of time” attempting to negotiate with the 40-year-old man. After an unspecified amount of time, officers heard a single gunshot coming from inside the residence. An initial investigation suggested the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The identity of the male is being withheld by LPD while his family members are notified. No further injuries were reported, and the Montana Department of Criminal Investigations is investigating.
