GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – Winds over the weekend pushed the Boundary fire that’s burning near the Canadian border in Glacier National Park.
The blaze has now grown to nearly 3,000 acres and crossed into Waterton Lakes National Park for the first time on September 7, prompting the closure of the Bison Paddock overlook which includes access to Horseshoe Trail.
Bertha Lake Trail, the Lakeshore Trail and the Bertha Lake and Bertha Bay Backcountry Campgrounds also remain closed due to wildfire activity in the area.
Fire managers report the winds calmed down on Sunday which allowed Canadian and U.S. crews to continue laying hose and setting up pumps north of the border and east of the perimeter of the fire. Helicopters once again supported work on the ground and dropped water on the southeast perimeter.
The blaze, which was first spotted on August 23, grew 221 acres on Sunday and is 13% contained.
High winds are forecast for the Waterton area on Monday with fire managers saying that crews may not be able to work near the edge of the fire due to unsafe conditions.
