Firefighters continue to make progress on Monument Fire

Posted

Fire officials are making progress on the Monument Fire burning south of Ennis.

As of Tuesday, the fire has burned slightly more than 6,600 acres and has been 56 percent contained. No structures are at risk.

Fire activity has been reduced due to efforts by fire officials and the recent cool and wet weather. The part of the fire that hasn’t been contained is on the northeast side of where it started, which is in a remote area that firefighters are not being sent to due to the risks.

“Yeah, it’s weighing the risk on where to put firefighters at versus the values at risks on the ground, and because there’s inaccessible terrain there, and no values at risk, it makes no sense to put firefighters there,” said Jim King of the Beaverhead-Deer Lodge National Forest.

There are no closures as a result of the Monument Fire, but backpackers are urged to stay away from the fire and areas it has burned.
