GALLATIN COUNTY — With a red flag warning in play for Gallatin County and the surrounding area, open burning is closed in every district in the valley right now.
All 17 fire districts in the area are at a high-risk level of 4 out of 5 on the meter.
The Bozeman Fire Department’s Fire Marshal issued the temporary restriction within city limits on Tuesday.
He says it's all about protecting resources and keeping people safe.
“It definitely takes a lot of resources if there is a wildland or range fire with something that can get out of hand,” said Bozeman Fire Department’s Fire Marshal Scott Mueller.
“Plus, by this time of year, with all the other fires in the whole region, the smoke layer in the whole region, it can become hazardous to folks’ health,” he said.
Gallatin County permits recreational fires if they are less than 48 inches in diameter; within Bozeman city limits, recreational fires must be less than 36 inches.
