BOZEMAN, Mont. – More than 500 first graders received a free book on Friday from the Bozeman Schools Foundation as part of the Links to Literacy program.

Volunteers visited schools throughout Bozeman, handing out hardcover copies of “Wolf in the Snow” by Matthew Cordell.

One of the group’s members, Kama Werner, says this program is essential because from 1st through 3rd grade, students learn the fundamentals of reading, which gives them a foundation for their education moving forward.

“It is just wonderful and to see them, you know, some of these kids don’t have books of their own,” said Werner. “And to give it to them and have them take it home and use it is a real gift. So it is nice.”

Werner said Cordell’s illustrated book teaches an important skill of understanding books without words that have only pictures.

The Bozeman Public Library will host an appearance by Cordell later in November.
