BOZEMAN, Mont. – On Saturday, close to 50 Trump protesters gathered about a half a mile away from the hangar where the president spoke in support of Republican Senate candidate Matt Rosendale.
The area was marked off specifically for protesters by the Gallatin County Sheriff. This was the same area protesters gathered when Barack Obama visited in 2009.
One of the people protesting, Bruce Smith from Bozeman, said he doesn’t support Trump because of his negative nature and comments.
“The real reason for my protest is my grandkids,” said Smith. “I am concerned about what he is doing for the country, with his animosity. I am concerned about what is going on financially. And also our position in the world. I am concerned about what he is handing to my kids.”
Several other protesters showed up in front of the airport to wave signs as cars drove into the parking lot. Veteran Barbara Tylka said Trump’s comments can be highly offensive.
“Yes, I fact check. I resent his comments that Democrats don’t appear to care for the county,” said Tylka. “Unlike Mr. Trump I am a military veteran and so for him to be telling me what it means to be a patriot is irritating.”
Tylka said it is discouraging to see such animosity in this country and fighting will lead nowhere.
“I think as long as we stay very divisive we are not gonna get anywhere. We are both, we are gonna be at our extremes and nothing is going to happen,” said Tylka.
Protesters on the scene said they received a mix of emotion from people driving by. They said some waved, some honked, and some made some nasty comments.
