The Bozeman School District has begun accepting name suggestions for the city’s new high school, due to open in August of 2020 at the corner of Oak and Cottonwood.

Bozeman School District Superintendent Rob Watson said in a media release that nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m., Feb. 15. After that, the High School Transition Committee will narrow down the list and the School Board must approve the final choice.

Names can be submitted online, and the School District has announced the following rules:

Please submit only one suggestion per person. All suggestions must be submitted by February 15 by 5 p.m.

Here are some parameters for making a suggestion for the name of the new school. These rules are set by our District policies regarding naming of facilities. Please read before submitting your suggestion.

  1. District buildings may be named after persons who have attained international, national, state, or local prominence, or after persons who have made a significant contribution to the district, or after the geographic characteristics of the area in which the facility is located.
  2. In addition, when possible the name shall be known to, and significant to, the people of the District.
  3. The names shall not conflict with the names of other schools in the District or surrounding districts. (Please see the web link above for a list of names of other local schools.)
  4. The use of the names of living persons or persons whose death occurred within five years of the selection shall be avoided.
