Man killed in Tobacco Roots avalanche identified

UPDATE

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has identified 35-year-old Benjamin Hirsch-McShane of San Francisco, California as the man killed in a Friday avalanche in the Tobacco Root Mountains south of Pony.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the incident by the U.S. Forest Service, Gallatin County Search and Rescue, the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, Two Bear Air, Central Copters, and LifeFlight Air Ambulance.

A skier is dead after an avalanche in the Tobacco Root Mountains on Friday.

According to a Facebook post from the Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, four skiers were caught in the avalanche near Bell Lake Yurt.

Although two skiers were able to grab trees and avoid being swept away, another was seriously injured, and one died from trauma sustained in the incident.

The incident was also confirmed on theGallatin National Forest Avalanche Center website.
