BOZEMAN, Mont. – Mayor Cyndy Andrus joins mayors around the country in asking local residents to conserve water for the month of April.

The city of Bozeman gets water from three main sources: Hyalite reservoir, Sourdough Creek and Lyman Creek. Because the city relies on the snowpack, it is considered drought prone.

“So that means that we have very limited supplies and our growing population is putting even greater demand on those already,” said Bozeman Water Conservation Specialist Jessica Ahlstrom.

Because it is too early in the year, the city won’t be able to tell if there is enough water until the snow melts.

“Unfortunately we don’t get an advance warning for low water years, but it will be important to keep an eye on how all this snowpack runs off and melts and how much snow we have left later in the summer,” said Ahlstrom.

Conservation can be achieved by installing a more efficient showerhead, lessening the amount of time for watering the law, and turning off the faucet when brushing your teeth.

“Water conservation is the city’s most sustainable solution to make sure that we do have a reliable water supply,” said Ahlstrom. “So it is important to raise awareness about the importance of conservation and what each person can do to help.”
