BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Bozeman Symphony has launched its search for its next music director.

This comes after Matthew Savery’s resignation in February after allegations of bullying and sexual harassment were made against him.

Savery served as the symphony’s conductor for 25 years and now the symphony is looking to turn the page to a new chapter.

“I think change is hard, but you know, it’s definitely needed to grow a position and grow an organization,” Director of Business Operations at the Bozeman Symphony, Emily Paris-Martin said.

And the change came at a perfect time.

“I think it’s a really great time just based on the interest that’s here in the community and with the community growing the symphony wants to grow with it and we’re just looking at this as an opportunity to build on something that is really great,” Paris-Martin said.

With there already being 70 applicants, the symphony is anticipating at least 100 will apply.

The symphony said that the hiring of its next music director is going to heavily rely on community input.

Paris-Martin said, “we’re going to be having a lot of activity when the finalists are identified and they are in town and how they engage with the community, with our donors and really important, how they engage with the musicians.”

Paris Martin said the new director will be appointed for the 2020-2021 concert season.
