The Shields and Yellowstone rivers in Livingston are expected to rise to near minor flood stage this weekend.
No property is threatened at this time, but with fluctuating river levels over the next few weeks significant impacts to residents and road closures, though unlikely, are still possible. Residents that live along the rivers need to be prepared.
“I think what we are expecting is having localized impacts to property. We have some groundwater that comes up and there’s potential with the Shields River changing its course last year, we may have some areas of unexpected flooding this year as well.” Park County Emergency Management Director Greg Coleman said.
Having a flood plan is essential and the county can help.
“You can go to the Park County Emergency Services website and there’s a list of flood resources, which has local businesses that may have sand bangs and other items for flood preparedness,” Coleman said.
Residents in the area say they’re not all that worried because they have seen it a lot worse but will continue to monitor it.
As of Friday afternoon, no other rivers in southwest Montana were expected to reach minor flood stage.
