A dozen students at Bozeman’s Emily Dickinson School are proud new owners of bikes and they had to be bookworms to get them.

School staff say the program, called “Books for Bikes,” came back to the school five years ago and has been a hit ever since.

Throughout the school year, kids turned in reading “tickets,” one for every half-hour of reading.

School principal Sarah Hays says the result was staggering; hundreds upon hundreds of tickets were turned in by students.

On Friday during a special assembly, faculty drew tickets with two students from each grade level winning a bike in the process.

“It was fantastic,” Hays says. “We want to see them reading but of course the prize of getting a bike is pretty exciting, too. I’m not exaggerating, hundreds of tickets. It was really wonderful.”

The bikes were sponsored by the Masons and Bangtail Bikes.
