BOZEMAN, Mont. – The new 60-acre Story Mill Park in Bozeman is set to open July 20, but dogs won’t be allowed everywhere in the park.

The park features a nature sanctuary that the city has decided will be off limits to your four-legged friend.

The park does have an off-leash area, along with space to walk your dog on leash.

Birds are nesting within the nature sanctuary and the city wants to ensure they are not disturbed by dogs.

“Even though they are extensions of our family, they love the birds in a different way than we do. They love them in a more tangible and physical way whereas we can sit in the bird blinds quietly and watch with binoculars or as we are walking or biking through the park,” said Addi Jadin, City of Bozeman parks planning and development manager.

The final adoption of the ordinance is set to happen Monday, July 15 at the city commission meeting. Once adopted, there will then be a 30-day grace period before the restriction is officially in place.
