With expected warm temperatures this weekend, a pond might look enticing — but one in Bozeman is closed because of a toxic algal bloom.

The Gallatin City-County Health Department (GCCHD) has closed the Sundance Springs subdivision pond, working in partnership with the Sundance Springs Homeowners’ Association.

It's a privately-owned pond, just east of East Graf and Rain Roper Drive, adjacent to the Sourdough Trail system.

A dog recently died at the pond, and it may have been caused by the toxin. Further sampling is being done.

The algae toxin is a threat to people, pets, and livestock.

GCCHD issued the following guidance:

"Ingestion or prolonged contact with the algal bloom may result in illness, with signs such as muscle twitching, staggering, convulsions, paralysis and death."

Health officials say humans, pets, and livestock should avoid all contact with the pond to avoid exposure to the toxin.

Anyone with questions or concerns can call GCCHD’s Environmental Health Services at 582-3120.
