BUTTE, Mont. – Women are being encouraged to seek jobs that for the most part are dominated by men.
A group of women attended a program at Highlands College in Butte to learn the value of trades usually taken by men.
The Department of Labor’s Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations (WANTO) grant program gave this group of 15 women a chance to attend a workshop at the college to exposes them to careers usually occupied by men, like construction and engineering jobs.
“Overall in the construction industry, whether that’s carpenters, road worker, heavy machine operators, plumbers, electricians, architects, engineers; only 4 percent of the workforce is represented by women,” said Paula Hunthausen of WANTO.
She added that there are fewer people in the trade fields, so encouraging women to seeks these careers is good for the industry.
