The lives of 15 children changed when they officially became parts of families at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on Saturday.

The Billings Adoption Celebration is one of about 400 across the country on National Adoption Day.

Thirteen families adopted the 15 children in the annual ceremony, put on by Wendy’s Wonderful Kids.

Judge Michael Moses, of the 13th Judicial District Court, finalized the adoptions.

He asked the families to listen to the sound of children.

“The best thing and our favorite thing to do,” Moses said about judges and adoptions. “It’s absolutely spectacular. And in our courtrooms, we hear that same noise at every single adoption.”

“We’ve just been blessed with not only the children that have been added to our lives. but through the family and friends that have stepped forward and helped us out,” said Scott Helmig, who along with his wife Karin, adopted another child, daughter Alphyra. “It’s not about adopting one child. It’s about the community adopting your family.”

“Through the foster care journey it’s definitely a roller coaster ride,” Karin Helmig said. “Ups, downs, but a lot of great memories and love along the way.”

Nationwide, during the 18 years of National Adoption Day, about 70,000 children have been adopted into families.
