GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks posted an alert on Facebook on Thursday to let visitors to Sluice Boxes State Park know that there is a dead horse about 1.5 miles in from the Evans-Riceville parking area trailhead.

The carcass is currently in Belt Creek. The horse was critically injured in the park on Sunday, September 2, and had to be euthanized by the owner.

Park staff moved the carcass off the trail and down into the canyon to minimize potential contacts with hikers and bears.

Due to extremely difficult access to the current location of the carcass, park management decided to let scavengers and nature take their course.

When hiking in the Sluice Boxes, visitors should always be aware of the presence of bears and carry bear spray.
