BOZEMAN, Mont. – Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue helped two snowmobilers who got stuck along Olson Creek early Saturday evening, according to a Sheriff’s Office media release.

The Sheriff’s Office says rescuers responded to a backcountry call around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The two snowmobilers were stuck about seven miles up Olson Creek off of Bridger Canyon Road.

The stranded individuals built a fire and waited in an area where they had cell service until the Search and Rescue team reached them on snowmobiles, dug out their sleds, and escorted them back to their vehicle.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, “bitter cold, deep snow, challenging terrain, and oncoming darkness were all factors in the rescue.”

Sheriff Brian Gootkin reminds the public that anyone in the winter backcountry should be prepared to spend the night outside, “including carrying warm clothes and a way to start a fire.”

“Always carry a means of communication, call for help as soon as you run into trouble, and follow the instructions of rescuers,” Sheriff Gootkin said.
