Glacier National Park backcountry permits open Friday

and last updated

Applications for backcountry camping in Glacier National Park open Friday, March 15, but with a new twist.

All advanced reservation applications for standard groups of 1-8 campers received on March 15 will be processed randomly using a lottery system.

The change comes after last year when so many applications were submitted on the first day that the system was overwhelmed.

Lauren Alley, Glacier National Park’s public affairs officer, said the lottery system is fairer for people with slower internet connections or people who struggle with technology.

All standard applications submitted after March 15 will be processed in the order they are received.

Applications are available online via pay.gov. Fax, phone, or in-person applications are not accepted.
