Hunting season is here, and check stations in south-central Montana will operate on weekends through the end of Montana’s general big-game season on Dec. 1.
Bob Gibson of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks says although numbers were low for opening weekend , he thinks its going to be a pretty normal season.
"There are a good numbers of animals out there, and license sales are doing well," Gibson said.
There are a couple of things that hunters going to the field this fall need to keep in mind.
"One needs permission to hunt on private property. Any time one is on public land, they need permission from the land owners. Secondly we want everyone to be safe. Always keep those firearms pointed in the right direction. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Keep your finger off the trigger until it is time to shoot and just be safe out there so we can have fun so we can have a successful hunting season," Gibson said.
Other safety tips to keep in mind while hunting:
- Always tell someone where you will be hunting and when you will return.
- Dress properly and be prepared for the worst possible conditions.
- Carry a first aid kit.
- Always clearly identify your target before shooting to prevent accidents or fatalities
