If you were a young kid in the early 1990s, you’ll remember “Rugrats” — an animated show from a baby’s point of view (with a bunch of clueless adults). The series premiered in August 1991 as the second Nicktoon, after “Doug” and before “The Ren & Stimpy Show, and the last episode aired in August 2004 after nine seasons.

But 30 years later — gulp — it’s coming back, complete with the original voice cast: E.G. Daily as Tommy Pickles, Nancy Cartwright (yes, Bart Simpson) as Chuckie Finster, Cheryl Chase as Angelica Pickles, Cree Summer as Susie Carmichael and Kath Soucie as Phil and Lil DeVille. Nickelodeon made the big announcement on Wednesday and shared an exclusive photo of the CG-reimagining of “Rugrats.”

The show will air on new streaming service Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access), which offers a free trial before you sign up. Another big kids’ TV favorite on the service is “SpongeBob Squarepants,” and the brand new “SpongeBob” series “Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years” will also be available from launch. Live-action versions of “Dora the Explorer” and “The Fairly Oddparents” will also debut on the service, which re-launches on March 4.

“Rugrats is one of the most iconic cartoons recognized by fans around the globe, and this original version is one we are taking great care and pride in creating for a brand-new audience,” Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation said in a press release. “Having the voice cast behind these special characters come together is one of the essential pieces to making the show recognizable and we can’t wait to watch this talented group bring them to life again.”

“Rugrats” voice director Charlie Adler shared his excitement on Twitter, saying he was “now free to say that I am so proud to be Voice Directing this glorious cast! And the writing and animation is mind blowing & brilliant!!”

“Rugrats” was a huge hit the first time around, leading to three movies, including “The Rugrats Movie” in 1998. It won four Daytime Emmy Awards and six Kids’ Choice Awards. It also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

So far, fans are divided on the reboot, mainly due to the more life-like characters (obviously, animation has come a long way since 1991). Some think the show looks creepy. One user at @RockaaByeBABYYY wrote, “The new rugrats looks weird. I don’t want it.”

Twitter user @jennaleonaa tweeted, “Can Hollywood please stop doing remakes of things and just come up with new and innovative ideas.. no one wants to see Rugrats in a weird animation style.”

However, lots of people are thrilled with the reboot news. One Twitter user approved of the original voice cast and the fact that the music has stayed faithful to the original. “I can safely say I’m hype!” they wrote. (Note: This tweet contains some profanity.)

No release date has been announced for the new “Rugrats,” but fans new and old will be hoping they don’t have too long a wait to find out what Tommy Pickles and the rest of the gang are up to.
