BOZEMAN – A weak disturbance is sitting over SW Montana Tuesday afternoon and could produce a few isolated thunderstorms through the early evening hours and there is a slight chance for a passing rumble tonight into Wednesday morning.

A Canadian cold front will drop down into Montana Wednesday and add better lift which means a better chance for stronger thunderstorms to rumble over the region.

The Storm Prediction Center has a low risk or “marginal” risk for strong to severe thunderstorms over SW Montana Wednesday afternoon and evening. Some storms could produce damaging wind gusts and/or damaging hail.

The bigger weather issue will be lightning and possible new fire starts over the next 2 days.

There is a RED FLAG WARNING or a fire weather warning up for the far eastern half of SW Montana and does include Gallatin County through 9 pm Tuesday evening.

The combination of hot, dry, and windy conditions is favorable for possible new fire starts so please be very careful with all outdoor activities to avoid accidental new human caused fire starts.

Temperatures will cool slightly beginning Wednesday and continue into Thursday but once this front passes through temperatures will be climbing again by the end of the week and into this upcoming weekend.
